GEORGE WEISS, JR., age 95
Of New Bremen, died on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at 10:13 P.M. at the Joint Twp. District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys. He was born on August 18, 1927 in Ideciul, De Sus, Romania, the son of the late Georg and Katharina (Leprich) Weiss. On October 9, 1954, he married Maria (Weiss) and together they shared nearly 55 years before her death on October 4, 2009. Surviving are his children: Monika Weiss of Houston, TX, Reinhard (Diane) Weiss of Cincinnati, OH, and Erich (Christy) Weiss of Hartsville, OH; and his five granddaughters: Kaitlyn, Nicole, Olivia, Madeline, and Audrianna Weiss. Also left to cherish his memory is his sister, Katharina Fillep of Germany. Along with his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by an infant daughter Anna Marie Weiss, five grandchildren, and his brother Johann Weiss.
George served in the United States Army in the 3rd Armored Division during the Korean War, being stationed in Germany since he was fluent in speaking German. After his service, he returned to Canada where he married Maria before they both moved to the United States, eventually settling in New Bremen. He first worked at the paper mill in St. Marys before becoming a machinist for nearly 15 years at the former STAMCO, and later went on to be a machinist at Crown Equipment Corp. for some 23 years before retiring in 1992. He was a hands-on person who always kept busy helping his children with their school projects, helping them fix their cars or renovating their homes. Each year he and Maria would plant, harvest, and can a large vegetable garden, make red currant wine and jam, and make their own sauerkraut. Together they also enjoyed Polka dancing, and traveled to various festivals to take part in the music and dancing. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen, and was an avid reader who enjoyed history books and daily newspapers. His granddaughters will remember their Opa as a funny, generous, and caring man who never forgot to call and send cards on special occasions.
