Duane T. Hartwig, 84,
of New Bremen, died at 9:54 A.M. on Monday, July 16, 2018 at the Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys, Ohio. He was born on October 24, 1933 in New Bremen, the son of the late Raymond W. and Mildred E. (Trittschuh) Hartwig. On April 4, 1953 he married his high school sweetheart, Alice R. Gilberg, and she survives in New Bremen. Also surviving are his children Dean and Kate Hartwig of New Bremen, Steve and Diana Hartwig of New Bremen, Jane and Pete Gariety of Jackson Center, Barb and Mike Holdren of New Bremen, and a daughter-in-law Yvonne Hartwig of New Bremen, thirteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and a brother Richard Hartwig of New Bremen. Along with his parents, Duane was preceded in death by his son Douglas Hartwig, and a granddaughter Grace Fullenkamp.
Duane was a 1951 graduate of New Bremen High School. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served for four years during the Korean War as an SK3 Petty Officer. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen, a 65 year member of the New Bremen American Legion Post 241, and the former Woodman of the World of New Bremen. For many years, Duane was an accountant at the former STAMCO in New Bremen, and later was a comptroller for Bell & Howell in Sidney. From 1977-1990 Duane and his son Dean owned and operated the former Hotel Bar in New Bremen. In his spare time, Duane was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed trap shooting, big game hunting, and mushroom hunting. He also enjoyed bowling, vegetable gardening, family picnics, family genealogy, and Cincinnati Reds baseball. As an Eagle Scout himself, Duane served as a troop leader for the New Bremen Boy Scouts and the Explorers. Family time was important to Duane, and he especially loved to spend time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
