JERALD A. “JERRY” NEWMAN, age 77,
Of New Bremen, died on Friday, September 15, 2023 at 7:41 A.M. at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima after a long battle with his health. He was born on November 2, 1945 in Joliet, IL, the son of the late Gordon A. and Maxine L. (Matteson) Newman. On November 30, 1974, he married Cynthia K. Wissman at St. Paul Church in New Bremen, and she survives in New Bremen. Also surviving are his sisters: Sandy (Bob) Shierk of Waxahachie, Texas and Donna McGriff of Rockford, Illinois; his in-laws: Chris (Bill) Poeppelman of New Bremen, and a number of beloved nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Jerry was a 1962 graduate of St. Charles High School in St. Charles, IL, and went on to further his education at the Joliet Junior College. After college, he joined the United States Navy where he served for four years. After his service, he came to visit a service buddy in St. Marys, eventually moving here, when he met Cindy and started working at the former Manbeck Nursery. He went on to work at Crown Equipment Corp., the former STAMCO, Lyons Electric, and Mesco Electric before working at Dickman Supply in Sidney where he retired in 2011. Jerry had been a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen where he was in the Lamplighters group, and he also belonged to the former New Bremen Men’s Garden Club and the New Bremen Jaycees. He was a member of the New Bremen American Legion, the New Bremen Athletic Boosters, and had played on the Wint’s softball team. Jerry loved to watch sports on television, and travel with Cindy, especially to their ‘happy place,’ Bear Lake, Michigan.

If you Google “Jerry Newman, New Bremen, Ohio”, what shows up is his picture under the heading of “World’s Nicest Guys”. I had the great privilege of working with Jerry for several years at Dickman Supply.
A constant smile and great conversation were among Jerry’s staples. His great love for Cindy frequently showed during our talks. Whether it be speaking about her teaching, golfing or trips–he never missed talking of her, his eyes sparkling. He will be sorely missed.
